A New Year can be a time for a new start, but resolutions don’t last. Why?
Goals look to an outcome with little consideration to changing who we are. Resolutions aren’t specific and don’t change who we are becoming today. Habits and systems change people and organizations. We become a runner rather than someone who is going to run a marathon.
For your new start reflect on what you just finished....
1. What worked, that I need to continue doing?
Was it the right amount or should I make a tweak? Long morning walks with a weighted vest have worked for two years. This year I have a daily average
rather than a daily goal. During the year, I always miss some days but with an
average per day I’ll raise my number of steps overall.
2. What do I need to stop doing or do less of?
Every "yes" we say equals a "no" we say to something else. Some of what we do is because others expect it, not because it’s the best investment of time. Be careful to say yes to what is best.
3. What will I do I wish I had done?
Every one of us has thoughts floating in our heads about the “what if” questions. What gets in the way of you taking that step? Fear or failure? Lack of discipline? Goals rather than habits?
Plan the year, plan each month, plan each week, and execute each day.
