Engagement is the cornerstone of thriving workplaces. It happens when we demonstrate we care about the people. New leaders unfortunately are often immediately directed towards metrics first.

When not given the guidance and mindset of relationships first, success seems like something we push people toward rather than pull them to.

Ensuring people feel valued and respected helps them give us permission to lead. Even if we don't realize it, permission to lead happens for the follower internally. The internal response comes from how people perceive us. Can they trust us? Do they feel cared for? Do we have character?

Be the Thermostat

Create a warm environment of respect, value, and connectedness to the mission and the team.

Promote Contribution: Encourage culture where everyone feels included and valued through responsibility.

Recognize Achievements: Regularly acknowledge individual and team accomplishments. Do this through simple appreciation and call out the work.

Encourage Collaboration: Create opportunities for team projects, building strong relationships. This enhances trust and cooperation.

Maintain Open Communication: Foster open, honest communication. Ensure psychological safety to express concerns and ideas without fear of retribution.

Professional Growth

Professional growth opportunities show the organization invests in their development. This can lead to increased satisfaction and loyalty.

Provide Training and Development: Offer workshops, courses, and seminars to help develop new skills and advancement. Encourage continuous learning and development.

Career Path Clarity: Create a clear career path direction. Set goals and provide resources and support to achieve them.

Mentorship: Pair team members with mentors who can guide, support, and advise on career development. Mentorship can be powerful for personal and professional growth.

Empowerment

Empowerment is the autonomy to make decisions and own the work. This not only increases engagement but drives innovation and productivity.

Delegate Authority: Allow team contributors to lead projects and make decisions. Show trust in their abilities and encourage initiative.

Encourage Innovation: Create a culture where ideas are welcome and valued. Provide platforms for sharing and contributing to organizational success.

Support Risk Taking: Encourage calculated risks and learning. This can lead to innovative solutions and continuous improvement.

Creating a positive culture requires intentionality. Implement strategies to increase engagement, growth, and empowerment focused first on people, helping drive organizational results.

When people are engaged, they are more than productive; they are enthusiastic and contribute because they believe in the work and the team.
